Sri Lanka's recent initiative, effective until March 2024, waives visa fees for tourists from India and six other nations. This move aims to reinvigorate the country's tourism industry, which faced a downturn due to the pandemic.
The move is expected to attract more tourists and reduce their planning time and expenses. Previously, Indian tourists had to pay a $20 visa application fee. However, visa applications are still required before travel.
Travellers can apply for Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online for a double entry on short visits (up to 30 days, extendable up to 60 days) and transit entry (up to two days). ETA can also be obtained at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo for last-minute travellers.

1. Piloting Revival: The waiver program serves as a pilot project by the Sri Lankan government to stimulate tourism. By eliminating visa fees, the program intends to entice more tourists while easing their planning burdens and reducing expenses.
2. Previous Visa Fee: Indian tourists planning a visit to Sri Lanka had to pay a $20 visa application fee. The elimination of this fee streamlines the travel process and potentially encourages more Indian travellers to explore Sri Lanka.
3. Visa Application Requirements: Despite the fee waiver, tourists are still required to apply for Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before their travel to Sri Lanka. This ETA allows for a double entry on short visits, initially up to 30 days, extendable up to 60 days. Additionally, it caters to transit entries for up to two days.
4. Online Application: Travelers can conveniently apply for ETA online, providing an accessible and streamlined process before their journey to Sri Lanka. This e-visa system offers convenience for tourists by facilitating planning and ensuring necessary travel documents are in order.
5. On-Arrival Option: For last-minute travelers, ETA can also be obtained at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo. This facility allows flexibility for travelers who may not have applied for ETA before arriving in the country.
